The UK and US have agreed to a important trade agreement that will ensure no levies on UK medicine shipments being sold in the US market.

The Terms of the Pact

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has pledged to boost spending on pharmaceuticals through the NHS. This commitment guarantees that duties on these crucial products will be held at nothing for a timeframe of three years.

This development comes after previous statements to hike tariffs on patented drug imports, with figures floated up to double the cost.

"This agreement between the Britain strengthens the international landscape for innovative medicines and establishes much-needed fairness to U.S.–U.K. drug exports," an announcement declared.

Commercial Importance

Drugs constitute one of the Britain's largest export categories to the America, which is easily the largest destination for major UK drugmakers.

Export figures show that in the year prior to last September, the UK sold drugs worth billions to the US. This amount made up nearly one-fifth of all goods exports in that period.

"This guarantee protects jobs, boosts funding and paves the way for the UK to establish itself as a worldwide center for life sciences," a minister remarked.

Specific NHS Changes

The agreement includes several key commitments from the UK:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will raise the cost ceiling at which it deems new therapies to be unaffordable by twenty-five percent.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a aim to raise overall health service expenditure on treatments from 0.3 percent of GDP to 0.6 percent over the coming ten years.
  • Payback Limit: The percentage manufacturers must return to the NHS to stay within budget will be limited at 15%. Previously, rebates exceeded twenty percent.

Recent Tensions

The deal follows a long-running tension between the drug companies and the UK government over medicine costs and NHS adoption.

This friction were intensified by assertions that US customers were charged several times more for the same drugs than people in the Britain and the EU.

Recently, several major drug company projects in the UK have been halted or abandoned, while multi-billion-dollar investments have been pledged toward projects in the United States.

The Science Minister publicly accepted that the NHS must spend more on drugs, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had shrunk as a share of its total funding over the last ten years.
